last day of VBS

Most of Saturday has come and gone here in Japan. We had a "mini-session" before lunch, which included a review of the English expressions the kids learned through the teaching of "Dr. Chuck" and the acting of Kyle and Brennan. After lunch we had our end of camp bazaar.

This evening, we short term missionaries and Sharon McCormick (who was visiting today, to the delight of the veterans) attended dinner at Izawa-san's daycare center. After our meal, we participated in a Japanese party ritual that included a shinai (Kendo version of a sword), a blindfold, and a watermelon. It's similar to the pinata ritual. All of us had a turn taking a whack at the watermelon. After the watermelon smash, we lit Japanese sparklers and fireworks. It was illuminating (and smokey). We're spending the night there tonight.

Thanks to all who kept us in their prayers this week. Please continue to pray for us as we go to Honda Chapel.

Konban Wa

The title of this post means "good evening." It signifies the closeness of the end of the day and it signifies the closeness of the end of Summer Bible Camp 2010 in Chiba, Japan. The week has been a blessing to all of us.

Aside from being "Go Fish Guys," "Go Fish Gals," and "Dr. Chuck" in the mornings, we have taken turns visiting the Day Care in the neighborhood and helping out there. We arrive just as the children are waking up from their afternoon nap. We then watch the kids play inside. Then comes snack time. After that, we have time outside if it isn't raining (if it is raining, we have craft time).

Yesterday we had Sushi at a restaurant where the food is served on a moving plastic belt. I tried some of the octopus dumplings and I absolutely loved them. So did Brennan "Take your pic" Kulp. Afterward, we went shopping at the same mall the Japan team visited, and ate at, last year. We didn't eat there this year, but we did shop. It had places such as "Daizo," a general store that sells everything but groceries.

Tomorrow we have a last hurrah as we give our final "Go Fish" concert. Afterwards, we'll have a bazaar where the kids get fake American money (one for every sticker they earned). Tomorrow night, we have a barbeque and overnighter at the Day Care. On Sunday, I give my testimony. On Sunday night, we dress up in yukatas and attend the Matsuri festival.

Kulp family, please tell Liam that, regrettably, we haven't been able to find an ancient scroll. We do, however, have more pictures that Brennan is dying to upload.

Oyasumi nasai (good night)!

I like Gates!

In addition to VBS today, we hosted an English Camp during the afternoon. Michiyo had given the American team large alphabet cards, which also had corresponding pictures, such as A for Apple, B for bear, etc. We were asked to give small English phrases, such as "Do you like dogs?" which would be anwsered by "Yes! I like dogs!." When it came to Pauls turn, he revealed his undying love for Gates! Another blessing we had today, was a slighty larger group of kids compared to yesterday. Attached are pictures taken throughout the day.

arigatou gozaimasu!

The title of our first blog means "thank you." Thank you for your prayers and support for this missions trip where we are teaching Japanese children the Bible as well as teaching them English. We had our first VBS session this morning. We are doing a modified version of "Go Fish Guys." The kids seemed to enjoy the songs and the activities. They also seemed to enjoy "Dr. Chuck's English Session" in which they learned the English phrase "Put 'er there," which is used during a friendly handshake. We hope that God will sprout the seeds that are being planted in this generation.

The voice you just heard (not really) in the background was Grace Dewalt complimenting my writing, then remembering that I was an English major in college. Wasn't that nice of her? Aside from being a writing critic, Grace is a member of the "Go Fish Girls" dance team, along with onii-san (big sister) Olivia and Emily King. Our Go Fish Guys are Kyle Trivits, onii-sama (big brother) Andrew, and Brennan Culp.

Pictures and, hopefully, a video will be uploaded later. Please keep reading our blog and, more importantly, please keep us in your prayers.

Your brothers and sisters in Christ,
The 2010 CEFC Short Term Missions Team in Japan

The team has arrived safely. Please pray that they will get good rest before VBS begins on Monday.
